What I most enjoyed about the seat and the flight was being in the nose of the 747.  The view from my windows in particular was fantastic and provided a most unusual perspective, one of looking along the line of flight and not to the side.

IN-FLIGHT SERVICE

As other passengers and I were settling in, the flight attendants serving the cabin offered pre-departure beverages including water, juice, and sparkling wine and I opted for the latter, wishing to celebrate my first 747-400 Combi flight.  It turned out that they were serving an excellent Nicolas Freuillate, Brut Réserve, which was pleasantly bubbly and fruity Champagne.

The cabin crew also distributed Victor & Rolf amenity kits, albeit a newer and not quite as useful style than what I had seen from my colleagues who have flown KLM (the old one was useful for carrying computer cables and chargers, among other things).  The kit included socks and eyeshades, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a pen, and lip balm.

A few years ago, KLM commissioned designer Marcel Wanders to create environmentally friendly tableware for World Business Class as well as Europe Business Class and his designs are both elegant and distinctive, so much so that the airline sells pieces from the collection in its duty-free shop. This was my first chance to see the plates, glassware, and cutlery in action.

Dinner was served once we were at our cruising altitude.  We started off with drinks – I chose a vintage 2012 François Lurton Les Fumées Blanches Sauvignon Blanc – accompanied by a large ramekin of nuts.  Next came a lovely smoked salmon appetizer paired with an apple and fennel cream garnished with citrus jelly, all served with a wasabi yuzu vinaigrette dressing.

On the tray was a pickled vegetable salad in anticipation of the main course.
