KLM World Business Class Flight 643 Amsterdam-New York – Review

For an entrée, we had a choice of a braised beef tartlet, vegetarian tajine, or my choice, miso-marinated chicken, which came with a black bean sauce, roasted pumpkin compote, ramen noodles, and vegetables.  The chicken was nicely prepared and tasty, although ultimately nothing special.  The pumpkin compote was excellent.

Daytime flights always give me an opportunity to sample more of the meal service and I indulged in dessert, a cheese platter with St. Cubin and Beemster cheeses accompanied by fresh fruit.  The crackers were served in plastic packaging (note to KLM: there is nothing premium about serving crackers in this fashion).

Prior to arrival, there was a second meal service, with everything served at once.  The star of this course was the really good falafel salad accompanied by marrowfat pea salad and piccalilli cream.  The main course was a decent enough chicken potpie and dessert was a somewhat forgettable raspberry cheesecake with vanilla sauce.  The other main course option was a tomato, mozzarella, and basil pie.

Prior to arrival, one of the flight attendants made rounds with a tray of KLM’s or Delfts blauwe huisjes, or Delft Blue miniature Dutch houses. Each house, which stands several inches tall, is filled with jenever, otherwise known as Dutch gin, and depicts an actual Dutch house somewhere in the Netherlands. KLM has been offering passengers this gift since the 1950s and there are so many that the airline built smartphone apps (iOS and Android) that allow passengers to track which houses they have and see exactly where the house is located in Holland.

Efficient, comfortable, and typically Dutch.  That’s what comes to mind after my first 747 Combi flight with KLM, which is the oldest airline in the world still operating under its original name, Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij.  This was my second experience with the airline and I’ll continue to seek them out as opportunities arise.
