Theater Review: ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ at the National Yiddish Theater Folksbiene

Theater Review: ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ at the National Yiddish Theater Folksbiene

Theodore Bikel would have approved.
The powerful new production of “Fiddler on the Roof” that opened recently at the National Yiddish Theater Folksbiene, is an authentic and, at times, extraordinarily moving experience.
Bikel, whose first stage appearance was in Sholem Aleichem’s “Tevye the Milkman” (one of Aleichem’s stories on which the musical was based) and who performed the role of Tevye in “Fiddler” more than any other actor although he wasn’t the …

Theater Review: 15 Years of ‘Avenue Q’ As Original Stars Return

It’s been 15 years since “Avenue Q,” the brilliant slacker musical, opened on Broadway with the cheery and rather innocent sounding opening number
The sun is shining,

Review: ‘Songs for a New World’ – Encores Off Center at City Center

It’s hard to know what to do with “Songs for a New World,” Jason Brown’s brilliant 1995 revue. It is a piece of musical theater, isn’t it? Or is it a song cycle? What was the plot again and who is Murray?
None of this matters.
Indeed, “It’s about one moment / That moment you think you know where you stand / And in that one moment / The things that you’re …

Review: ‘The Fourth Wall’ at A.R.T./NY Theatres

A.R. Gurney is know for witty plays such as “The Dining Room” and “The Cocktail Hour,” which explore upper-class WASP life in contemporary America. “The Fourth Wall,” set in a similar household, is the study of a quartet of characters who wrestle with one person’s obsession with the fourth wall in a room.
First staged in 1992, “The Fourth Wall” is being produced, in an off-Broadway revival, by the Theater Breaking …
