Apple Expands Emergency SOS Satellite Communications to Germany, France, Ireland, and the U.K.

Apple said it has added support for its new Emergency SOS via satellite feature to multiple countries in addition to the United States and Canada.

Emergency SOS is now supported on the iPhone 14 lineup in Germany, France, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

Those (un)lucky iPhone 14 users who find themselves in dire straits without a cellular or Wi-Fi signal can now connect with emergency services.

The service can also be used to reassure friends and family of the iPhone user’s whereabouts when off the grid by opening the Find My app and sharing their location via satellite.

In areas where a standard connection to a 911- or 112-type emergency services number isn’t available, a message on the device will say, “No Connection. Try Emergency Text Via Satellite.”

Users can connect via text to emergency services call centers known as Public Safety Answering Points without any additional hardware or software.  The answering points will receive the emergency text messages and assist the caller as required. In cases where the answering point can’t receive iPhone text messages, Apple-trained emergency specialists will work with them on behalf of the caller.
