American Airlines announced it had received approval from the Environmental Protection Agency to use a new electrostatic spraying solution to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.

The Fort Worth-based airline will spray high-touch surfaces inside some of its aircraft with SurfaceWise2, an antiviral solution that kills up to 99.9% of viruses, including coronavirus, on surfaces. The product is the first “long-lasting” spray approved by the EPA.

The airline will first use SurfaceWise2, which is manufactured by Allied BioSciences, on aircraft flying in and out of its Dallas/Fort Worth hub.

“SurfaceWise2’s long-lasting defense provides a layer of protection against viruses not offered by any other solutions on the market,” said Maha El-Sayed, PhD, Allied BioScience Chief Science Officer.

American is the first airline to be given the green light to use the product on its aircraft.

The airline said it is “taking bold measures and using the latest products and technology to help ensure our customers’ well-being,” said the airline’s chief operating officer, David Seymour.
