A high-wind warning is in effect for much of the Northeast on Monday, the National Weather Service said, with forecasters calling for wind gusts that could reach 65 mph (104 km/h).  The agency said to expect “hazardous weather conditions” until Monday evening.

Wind speeds could be higher in eastern Suffolk County on Long Island, where forecasters called for gusts up to 75 mph (121 km/h).

“Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles,” the agency warned. “Use caution if you must drive.”

The storm will result in flight delays and cancellations in the region but given the current dearth of flights due to travel restrictions during the novel coronavirus pandemic, the impact will be minimal.

Referring to the field hospitals that have been established for treating those with the novel coronavirus, the agency said that “even sturdy and well-secured tent structures could be damaged.”  The storm could down trees and power lines, leading to numerous power outages in the region.

“Widespread power outages are expected,” said the agency in its warning.

The high-wind warning is in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time.

“People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches,” the National Weather Service said.  “If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows.”
