Delta One Business Class Los Angeles-New York JFK – Flight Review

Sometimes, airlines do hold flights for connecting passengers. To find out how I know, keep reading.

My travel companion and I were on our way back from Kona and planning to connect to Delta’s first LAX-JFK non-stop. The flight to New York was scheduled to start boarding at 5:25 a.m. with a 6:05 departure. This means the gate agent would close the door at around 5:55. Meanwhile, our flight from Kona had suffered an hour’s departure delay due to a ticketing problem with an international passenger and was slated to arrive at the gate at that very same time.

Because we were in the very first row of the plane, I felt it was worth making a run for it, especially given that the departure gate wasn’t more than five minutes from our arrival gate at LAX, as did a Delta agent on the Platinum line whom I consulted about protecting us on subsequent flights later in the day in case we didn’t get on the 6:05.

So we ran, visions of the 1978 Hertz commercial with disgraced football player O.J. Simpson dancing through the airport in my mind. From a distance, the gate came into view and the door was still open. We picked up speed and were soon on the jetbridge and onto the aircraft. (Unfortunately, at least for the other passengers who were on our Kona flight and continuing onto New York, the agent closed the door once she saw we were safely on board.)

BOARDING

As you might have guessed, boarding was over by the time we got to the gate. Indeed, our arrival onto the aircraft was scrutinized carefully by other passengers in the Delta One business-class cabin wondering why the airline had held the plane for us.

I quickly and quietly settled into my seat, 1A, and glanced at the breakfast menu, while enjoying a pre-departure glass of Champagne.
