JetBlue announced plans to offer passengers high-speed in-flight Internet access on its aircraft, with an expected downstream speed of 12 Mbps.  JetBlue is offering the service, Fly-Fi powered by Exede Internet, in partnership with ViaSat, a fixed and mobile satellite network services company, and LiveTV.

The new system uses Ka-band, which allows higher bandwidth communication although it is more susceptible to a loss of signal strength in rainy conditions, and ViaSat-1, a high-capacity communications satellite.

Installation on JetBlue aircraft will begin later this year and the airline’s entire fleet is expected to have the service by the end of 2015.

The system will deliver a guaranteed 12 Mbps to each user and ViaSat told Frequent Business Traveler that there is more than sufficient bandwidth to support every single passenger on a given aircraft at that speed.
