Bomb Found Outside Sri Lankan Airport After Explosions Kill At Least 200 in Several Cities

IMG_7746 2A bomb was found on a road leading to the main airport in Sri Lanka just hours after suicide bombers at three luxury hotels and three churches killed at least 207 people and injured almost 500.

The device was found on a road in close proximity to Bandaranaike International Airport, also known as Colombo International Airport, by members of the country’s air force.

“A PVC pipe which was six feet in length containing explosives in it was discovered,” said Gihan Seneviratne, a spokesman for the air force.

The bomb was disposed of in “a controlled area,” the spokesman added.

Earlier in the day, security was tightened at the airport and only passengers were allowed to enter the terminal building. A nationwide curfew is in effect until 6 a.m. Monday.

Bandaranaike Airport is named after former Prime Minister SWRD Bandaranaike and is 20 miles (32.5 kilometers) north of the commercial capital city of Colombo. The airport opened to the flying public in 1967.

The airport is a hub for SriLankan Airlines and is used by over 30 airlines including Aeroflot, Air India, Edelweiss Air, KLM, LOT Polish Airlines, and Thai Airways.
