The holidays are just around the corner but it’s never too early to start planning an escape from the winter doldrums for the New Year.

Whether you seek fun in the sun or easy access to winter sports, you’ll find the perfect spot to recharge.

Here are five of our favorites.

ASPEN
Hotel Jerome

Situated in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the Hotel Jerome is one of the nation’s premier ski lodges. The Jerome opened in 1889, when Aspen was still a silver mining town. It was the first hotel in the American West to be equipped with an elevator and one of the first to be fully outfitted with electric lighting. The building itself is a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.

Renovated in 2012, public areas include a grand full-relief oak-carved fireplace, encaustic tile work patterned after a Native-American rug, and the J-Bar’s Chippendale Chinoiserie bar.

The generously-sized rustic rooms feature stone fireplaces and comfortable furnishings and the hotel keeps a ski concierge on hand for winter fun. The concierge has a friendly four-legged assistant who will do anything for a guest as long as he gets a treat in return.
