Eight were injured when an American Airlines plane caught fire on the runway at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport Friday afternoon.

The Federal Aviation Administration said that American Airlines Flight 383, which was bound for Miami, experienced engine trouble during takeoff. The pilots aborted takeoff at approximately 2:35 p.m., as part of the aircraft caught fire, sending large clouds of thick black smoke into the air.

The emergency chute exits were deployed, and all 161 passengers and nine crewmembers were successfully evacuated, although eight, including seven passengers and one crewmember, reported minor injuries and are being treated at local hospitals.

The runway was closed following the incident. Delays are expected to continue throughout the day at the Chicago airport.
