Mark Hopkins San Francisco, California – Hotel Review
I needn’t have worried.
The Nob Hill Club, just like the old club lounge, is on the ground floor beyond the hotel’s massive reception desk. While it looked completely different, it was nonetheless completely recognizable. The most prominent change was the addition of what the hotel calls “deep Pinot Noir hues,” which work nicely with the excellent natural light the room enjoys as well as the elegant walnut floor.
The furnishings, divided into sections for lounging, casual dining, and more formal dining, are a mixture of chairs and couches in rich tones ranging from beige and brown to plum. The room has a clubby feel and I instantly felt at home.
The lounge offers many dining and snack options. Breakfast, which is now open to the public (at a price), was similar to what I’ve had before, a huge buffet consisting of yoghurt, cereals, fruits, cold cuts, cheese, eggs, a variety of juices and smoothies, and excellent breads and rolls. The croissants were perfect, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I had several after being assured they had no calories.
The Nob Hill Club offers a wide variety of menu options for lunch and dinner including salads, burgers, and Wagyu hanger steak. Desserts are inventive and delicious: pear and port ice soufflé with Grand Marnier, anyone? I had dinner in the lounge one evening with our European Editor Christian Stampfer (see Virtual Tour for the meal) and we both enjoyed it immensely.
In the afternoon, the hotel presents a wide variety of hors d’ouevres and drinks, complimentary to guests with club access.
