Kempinski Hotel Airport Munich, Germany – Review

The end of a journey can be sad but, over the past few years, there’s one thing I’ve always looked forward to the night before my departure from Munich: staying at the Kempinski Hotel Airport München.  As our European Editor Christian Stampfer and I drove up after a seven-hour drive from Italy, we received a warm greeting as the doorman walked over to the car, opened the doors, and offered to help us with the luggage.

As we entered the check-in area, everyone seemed to be in a good mood.  Indeed, it seems that the hotel engenders this both in its staff and guests.  In part, this is because this hotel is a luxury hotel that just happens to be not only at the airport but literally between the airport’s two terminals.  Its modern, glass design mimics that of the airport: thanks to the geranium-filled atrium, it has, at 1,400 meters (4600 feet) one of the highest lobby ceilings of any hotel I can recall.  During the day, there is glass everywhere, while at night the building is bathed in color.

THE ROOM

My Executive Suite was elegantly appointed with a separate bedroom and generously-sized walk-in closet.  A guest bathroom was by the entry foyer near the living room.

The bed dominated the bedroom and was supremely comfortable.  The room darkening drapes kept the room dark until my wake-up call.

Having stayed here almost a dozen times, what always impresses me is how thoughtful and well laid out the guest rooms are.  The walk-in closet has a shelf for one’s suitcase and the nearby shelves make it easy to quickly pack and unpack,  necessary for a hotel most people stay at for just one night and sometimes a quick night at that, depending on one’s flight arrival or departure time.

The marble bath is equally well laid out, not huge, but it uses the space very well and has a large soaking time plus a separate shower.  Here, too, everything from tissue dispenser to hair dryer to toilet paper holder is exactly where it should be.

ROAD WARRIOR SUPPORT

The generously-sized writing desk faced the window (sadly, I didn’t have views of airport operations this time around) and had more than enough room for my MacBook Pro, iPad, and a few papers.  Two covered outlets are on the top of the desk.

The desk was paired with a comfortable but non-ergonomic chair.
