ROAD WARRIOR SUPPORT

The elegant writing desk was more than sufficient for my needs and the wooden chair provided decent but not great back support for working. Wireless Internet access was slow and cost €17 for 24 hours. Complimentary Internet access was available in the Business Center.

Next to the desk were several easily accessible outlets mounted on the wall at the perfect height.  The in-room safe had an electrical outlet for charging a laptop or tablet during storage.

DINING

Breakfast at the Excelsior is nothing short of sumptuous.  The rolls, breads, and croissant were excellent, as were the egg dishes I ordered off the menu.  The second morning of my stay, the waitress remembered my fondness for carrot juice with a splash of apple juice and brought it to the table without my having to say a word.

While on earlier visits  I had dined at the Hanse Stube restaurant several times with my father, I did not have an opportunity to eat there on this trip.  The menu is still French influenced cuisine and I have fond memories from past dining experiences.  Both lunch and dinner are served.

BOTTOM LINE

While the Excelsior Hotel Ernst harkens to a bygone era of luxury and style, it is very much a twenty-first century hotel and is the perfect spot for the business traveler visiting Cologne.

A combination of extremely heartfelt and authentic hospitality combined with a staff that seems to be able to anticipate guests’ needs before they voice them made for a very pleasant visit and I hope my travels take me back to Cologne soon so I can enjoy the Excelsior once again.
