British Airways Retires Entire Boeing 747 Fleet ‘with Immediate Effect’ Amidst Downturn in Travel

British Airways said it had retired all of its Boeing 747 fleet “with immediate effect” as it struggles with plummeting air travel amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
“It is with great sadness that we can confirm we are proposing to retire our entire 747 fleet with immediate effect,” the airline said in a statement.

American Airlines Issues Layoff Notices to 25,000 Workers

American Airlines warned 25,000 employees, approximately 29% of its customer-facing workforce, of impending layoffs that would happen on or after October 1 of this year as the aviation industry continues to reel amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
The notices were sent in compliance with federal labor laws and were sent to airport and technical operations workers who could be transferred to other locations, the airline said.

The Hawaiian government announced it would postpone the state’s reopening to visitors until September 1.
