Good morning! Today is Sunday, the 10th of May, 2026 and this is the Weekend Edition of GEORGE.

Today is also Mother’s Day in many countries across the globe. Established by Anna Jarvis in West Virginia in 1908, Mother’s Day is an annual holiday celebrated in the United States and many other countries on the second Sunday in May. The holiday recognizes mothers, motherhood, and maternal bonds in general and is an occasion for visits, phone calls, video calls, and elaborate gatherings.

Flowers are a traditional Mother’s Day present in many countries.

In Austria, Marianne Hanisch, who in 1902 had founded the Bund Österreichischer Frauenvereine, or Federation of Austrian Women’s Movements, is considered the initiator of Mother’s Day observance. She solidified her ideas by 1826, having the city of Vienna’s Pfadfinder, or Boy Scouts, literally “path finder,” march along the famed Ringstraße, a grand boulevard that serves as a ring road around the city’s center, to celebrate the holiday. In Germany, the holiday was championed by German florist shops that would promote Muttertag with signs in their windows stating, “Ehret die Mutter.” Nonethess, GEORGE wishes to say: Happy Mother’s Day, Alles Liebe zum Muttertag, Gelukkige Moederdag, joyeuse fête des mères, Buona Festa della Mamma, feliz día de la madre, feliz dia das mães, 母の日おめでとう, С днем матери, День Матері, and יום האם שמח.

Iran issued a reply to the one-page U.S. peace proposal and GEORGE has full details on what might have been said. Both sides are seeking to permanently end hostilities but the enriched uranium in Iran is a bone of contention.

Elsewhere, Viktor Orbán is no longer Hungary’s prime minister. The Trump ally was booted out by the Hungarian electorate and opposition leader Péter Magyar’s Tisza Party won enough seats in parliament to form a majority government without partnering with another party.

The new prime minister said that Hungarian voters gave his government a mandate “to open a new chapter in Hungary’s history.”

 — Iran sent its response to the latest U.S. ceasefire proposal via Pakistani mediators, which was a simplified, one-page document. The country formerly known as Persia wants negotiations to focus on permanently ending the war, Iran’s state-run media said Sunday. Pakistan confirmed receiving the response from Iran, which said it wants to end the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon , where Israel is fighting the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group. The Iranian government also wants to ensure the security of shipping, especially in the Strait of Hormuz, its state TV said. The Trump administration’s latest proposal addressed a deal to end the war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and roll back Iran’s nuclear program, an issue that Tehran would rather discuss later. The White House had no immediate comment after it became known that Iraq had sent its reply. Mr. Trump is giving diplomacy “every chance we possibly can before going back to hostilities,” the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, told ABC.

@TODAY IN BRIEF

In Hungary, history was made when Péter Magyar, the country’s former opposition leader, was sworn in on Saturday as prime minister of Hungary, after his Tisza party won a landslide victory, claiming 138 seats in the 199-seat parliament, five more than the 133 needed for a two-thirds constitutional majority. Magyar ur’s (Mr. Magyar’s) uphill campaign to unseat now former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, whose 16 years in power made him a global icon of nationalist right-wing politics. Magyar ur’s has vowed to reverse the democratic backsliding and embedded corruption that built up over the past decade and ultimately turned Mr. Orbán’s supporters into Magyar ur’s supporters. “I won’t rule Hungary, but serve it,” Magyar ur promised in his inaugural speech, which he gave before a newly-seated Parliament.

The first passengers on the MV Hondius, the ship at the center of a deadly outbreak of the hantavirus, have disembarked and flown home to Spain as part of a World Health Organization evacuation program.  The ship arrived in the Canary Islands in the wee hours of Sunday morning carrying 146 passengers. Three passengers died of the virus and eight more became ill. The passengers, who were asked to don blue plastic ponchos and hair covering, were escorted off the vessel by medical teams in hazmat suits early Sunday morning.  Hantaviruses are a family of viruses spread primarily by rodents (mainly deer mice) through their urine, feces, or saliva, causing severe, often fatal respiratory or renal illnesses in humans. The most severe form in the Americas is Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, which can have a fatality rate of up to 50%. No one at the present time on board the MV Hondius is symptomatic, but passengers and crew have been confined to their cabins in the past few days to help stop the spread of the hantavirus. The virus is typically not subject to human-to-human contact but can be spread between two people via very close contact.

The U.S. Department of Justice filed cases in federal courts this past week to revoke the citizenship of 12 immigrantswho committed crimes or took other actions that officials say disqualify them from being Americans. The suits state that the individuals whose citizenship the agency seeks to revoke obtained their status through fraud or lying about past criminal activities, or because they showed allegiance to terror organizations after obtaining citizenship. The move signals that the Trump administration plans to make good on a pledge to increase the rate of denaturalizations. Denaturalizations are rare because the process to revoke an individual’s citizenship is difficult.

The European Commission issued a statement that precludes airlines headquartered in member countries from adding and charging a fuel surcharge to passengers after they have paid the original asking price for their ticket. The ruling was necessitated after Spanish low-cost carrier Volotea attempted to add a fuel surcharge to tickets that passengers already booked. “Anyone selling air tickets must always display the final price the passenger will pay,” the commission wrote in a memorandum on Friday. “This includes all unavoidable and foreseeable taxes, fees, and charges. Adding a fuel surcharge to a ticket after it has been bought cannot be justified.” The commission also stated that passengers who already paid a fuel surcharge to Volotea or any other airline are entitled to reimbursement.

The most expensive apartment ever sold was purchased by the wealthiest man in Ukraine, Rinat Akhmetov, the founder of international investment group System Capital Management. The apartment, a five-floor, 21-room waterfront flat in Monaco’s Le Renzo building, sold for €471 million ($555.8 million), in a deal that closed in 2024 but that only recently came to light in Monaco’s property records and documents reviewed by the news service Bloomberg. The 21-room flat offers some 27,000 square feet (2,508 square m) of space, not including various balconies and terraces that overlook the Mediterranean Sea. The apartment’s amenities include a private pool, a jacuzzi, and eight parking spots and the apartment building is in Mareterra, Monaco’s newest residential district that was built on land reclaimed from the sea and inaugurated by Prince Albert II in 2024. The building was designed by Pritzker Prize-winner Renzo Piano. The apartment spans about 27,000 square feet, not counting the balconies and terraces overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. There’s a private pool, a jacuzzi, and at least eight parking spaces. You know, the basics.

The much maligned Tesla Cybertruck has been subject to 11 recalls in the United States since its launch. The most recent one  was announced on 8 May by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Apparently the truck could experience a sudden and rather unexpected wheel separation, thanks to the use of the wrong grease and loose nuts. This comes follows of a separate recall for all Cybertrucks that had been manufactured up to that point where Tesla had used the wrong glue on a steel trim panel that the automaker said could become detached while driving.  The wheel separation recall affects certain model year 2024 to 2026 Cybertrucks that came equipped with 18” steel wheels either during production, beginning in August 2025, or later during service, according to a report Tesla filed with the NHTSA. The issue centers on the trucks’ brake rotors. According to the report, rough road conditions and cornering could strain the stud holes in the wheel rotor and cause cracks to form. If those cracks spread with continued driving, a stud could eventually separate from the wheel hub, something especially likely when driving over “higher severity road perturbations.” Tesla said early signs of the problem could include vibrations or noises audible from inside the truck. The total number of vehicles impacted by the recall is believed to be in the hundreds, based on publicly available information. The company said that Tesla stated there were no reported crashes, injuries, or fatalities tied to the defect at the time of the announcement

@NEWS IN DEPTH

Putin Says Russo-Ukrainian War ‘May Be’ Coming to an End

Hours after he promised the Russian people a victory in the war with Ukraine at Moscow’s most significantly downsized Victory Day parade in decades, Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters  that he believed that the Russo-Ukrainian War was coming to an end, amidst remarks

“I think that the matter is coming to an end,” Mr. Putin told reporters of the Russia-Ukraine war, Europe’s deadliest conflict since Second World War, which he has also called a “special military operation.” He also said he would be willing to negotiate new security arrangements for Europe, and that his preferred negotiating partner would be Germany’s former Bundeskanzler, Gerhard Schroeder.

Following his return to office, Mr. Trump launched intensive efforts to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine in 2025, culminating in a reported three-day ceasefire from May 9–11, 2026. Throughout 2025, his administration pushed for a 100-day peace plan, involved special envoys, and threatened to cut aid to force negotiations

The Kremlin has said peace talks brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration were on pause. Putin has repeatedly vowed to fight on until all of Russia’s various war aims are achieved in what Moscow calls the “special military operation”.

Putin was speaking in the Kremlin after setting out his view of the causes of the war. He blamed “globalist” Western leaders, saying they promised the North Atlantic Treaty Organization would not expand eastward.

The 2022 invasion of Ukraine has caused the largest conflict in Europe since Second World War, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths, a major refugee crisis, and extensive global economic disruption. The war has led to significant destruction of Ukrainian infrastructure, massive displacement, severe international sanctions on Russia, and a major shift in global geopolitics, including the strengthening of NATO.

Tension in the relation between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in the period 1960 through October 1962 were at one of their highest points of tension since the start of the Cold War, characterized by profound mutual distrust, a fast-paced nuclear arms race, and several brinkmanship crises. This period was marked by a shift from the “spirit of Camp David” in 1959 to intense confrontation including the 1960 U-2 incident, the 1961 Berlin Crisis after Ostdeutschland built the Berliner Mauer, or Berlin War; and the failed 1962 Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, not to mention the arms race and rhetoric relating thereto that included an active campaign in the United States to raise fallout shelter awareness and practice school evacuation drills.

It is therefore not surprising that Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine reignited many of the long-dormant and long-simmering fears of a nuclear holocaust since the early 1960s, a period which point many feared the massive destruction and loss of life that would result from a war in which nuclear weapons were deployed.

@RECENT DISPATCHES OF NOTE

It was just five years ago that BMW’s design chief Adrian van Hooydonk, explained the storied automaker’s aggressive and rather large front grille by saying that the company “wanted to make a statement.” The design shift was intended to create an aggressive, confident, and distinct aesthetic intended to differentiate models and boost brand recognition, he continued. The look, however, was polarizing and derided as much as it was praised. Today, however, BMW has abandoned the more complex, edgy look of the past few years, instead introducing the Neue Klasse, or New Class, platform that makes its debut with the 2026 iX3 and i3. The result is a far more pleasing look with sharper, illuminated, and vertically oriented kidney grilles that merge with the integrated headlights, creating a look  that is highly reminiscent of the 1960s original Neue Klasse, not through direct retro styling, but by adopting the same philosophy: radical minimalism, increased visibility, and a clean, functional design language that breaks from the previous era. The new design focuses on simplified surfaces and, like models introduced in 1962 and produced through 1972, prioritizes interior space, efficiency, and a new, more elegant front end. These vehicles are credited with saving BMW from financial collapse in the early 1960s and defined the brand’s identity.

GEORGE listened in on the Bayerische Motoren Werke first-quarter earnings call and it seemed as if every analyst wanted to know what Vorstandsvorsitzender, or CEO, Oliver Zipse thought about Mr. Trump’s latest tariff threat. Herr Zipse described the proposed 25% tariff on EU-built cars as more of a negotiating tactic than a finished policy, and kept BMW’s full-year guidance unchanged. Herr Zipse also said that BMW was prepared to ride out further trade noise without changing its production plans. BMW shares climbed after the German Autohersteller, or car manufacturer, signaled that it was on track to hit its targets despite an earnings hit in the first quarter from strong competition in Chinaand global tariffs.
