Thousands of Flights Delayed as Storms Bring Snow, Ice, Blizzards, Knock Out Power in Many Areas
A series of brutal winter storms has left almost one million households and businesses without power and resulted in almost 3,000 flight delays and cancellations in the United States and parts of Canada.
The storms are bringing snow, ice, and blizzard conditions from California to the Northeast on Thursday. The extreme weather has resulted in numerous road closures and hazardous driving conditions, even as the Southeast basks in unseasonably warm temperatures.
There have been 1,993 flight delays within, into, or departing the United States along with 871 cancellations as of 11:30 a.m. EST. The airports seeing the greatest impact of the storms include Minneapolis/St. Paul International, Toronto Pearson, Boston Logan International, and Chicago O’Hare.
On Wednesday, there were 7,103 within, into, and out of the United States along with 1,773 cancellations.
At press time, there were over 60 million people under winter weather alerts from the West into the northern Plains, Great Lakes region, and New York State and New England.
Meanwhile, heavy snow has already hit parts of the country over the past two days. As of early Thursday, more than 40” (102 cm) in parts of southern Wyoming; up to 32” (81 cm) in northwestern Montana; and generally 3” to 6” (8 cm to 15 cm) across Nebraska and the Dakotas.
