United Airlines announced Saturday the opening of a new type of airline lounge.

The 1,600-square-foot (149-square-meter) United Club Fly is designed as a grab-and-go market.  It offers a variety of complimentary beverages and food items  that include sandwiches, wraps, and salads as well as smaller items and sweets such as Noosa yogurt cups and Milk Bar Birthday Cake Truffles.

A barista is present when the lounge is open and will prepare a variety of coffees including cappuccino.  The lounge also has a self-serve coffee machine and a water-bottle refilling station.

As a grab-and-go facility, seating is limited to 16 people, with standing room for eight at the bar.  Access to the new lounge is available for individuals flying in either international business- or transcon business-class, or with a United Club membership. Some United Airlines credit cards also offer lounge access.

The traveler must be eligible for standard United Club access but, given the size of the facility, no guests are permitted.  There does not appear to be any rule against bringing a guest something from United Club Fly, however.

While the grab-and-go concept is new for United, other airlines, including Lufthansa have long offered miniature lounges where a traveler can quickly get water, coffee, or a snack.
