WestJet announced the appointment of Diederik Pen to the position of executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Mr. Pen has been COO at Budapest-based ultra low-cost carrier Wizz Air since 2013. Prior to that, he was CEO of Martinair Holland, which he joined in 2006 and where he held various managerial positions.  He also served in various positions at Virgin Blue Airlines in Australia, Brisbane Airport, and at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

“Diederik has an established track record of leading safe, efficient and cost-effective operations through periods of growth, and we are thrilled to welcome him to the WestJet family,” said the airline’s CEO, Ed Sims.

He studied economics and marketing at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where he obtained a master’s degree in 1992.

In addition to the appointment of Mr. Pen, the company also announced the appointment of Robert Antoniuk, currently its interim COO, to the position of chief safety, health, and environment officer, a new position.
