Massive Internet Outage Takes Down Delta, BA, FedEx, Airbnb, and McDonald’s
A widespread Internet outage disrupted major travel, financial, retail, and Olympics-related websites across the globe early Thursday afternoon.
The problem, traced back to outages at Akamai and Oracle, two major providers of Internet infrastructure, took down Delta Air Lines, British Airways, FedEx, Airbnb, HSBC, and McDonald’s among others.
“We are aware of an emerging issue with the Edge DNS service,” Akamai said at the time of the outage, which lasted less than an hour in most cases.
Other affected websites included Britain’s National Health Service, Fidelity, and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s document search site,
Some municipal governments reported disruptions to 911 service as well in jurisdictions in Illinois and Virginia.
Akamai later said that the outage was not the result of a cyberattack.
