A woman was shot Monday night outside the Grand Hyatt hotel at San Francisco International Airport in what appears to have been an attempted carjacking.

In a statement, the San Francisco Police Department said it had responded a shooting on the roadway in front of the hotel shortly before 8 p.m. local time and that the suspect had fled the scene.

A witness to the shooting said on Twitter that it had been the “craziest thing” he had ever seen.

“Just saw a shootout in broad daylight at the Grand Hyatt SFO. Craziest thing I’ve ever seen,” said Taylor Brooks in a tweet.  Brooks described a scene where a group of three black males in a white SUV started shooting at “another group of black men” who were loading bags into a Cadillac Escalade who then returned fire with what Brooks believed was an assault rifle.

The police department could not confirm what it believed to have taken place.

“SFPD could not confirm the number of suspects or shots fired,” it said in a statement. “We are not providing further details of the shooting due to the open and active investigation and investigators are still gathering information,” adding that  “[T]here is no suspect description to provide at this time nor is the suspect in custody.”
