The oneworld Alliance announced the appointment of Qatar Airways Group Executive Akbar Al Baker to the position of chairman of the governing board.

Mr. Al Baker succeeds Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas Group, who had served as chairman since September 2018. Prior to becoming CEO of Qatar Airways, he worked at the Civil Aviation Directorate of Qatar and also served as the CEO of the Qatar Tourism Authority.

The oneworld Alliance was first announced in September 1998 by its founding members, American Airlines, British Airways, the now-defunct Canadian Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas.  It began operations in February 1999

The group currently has 14 member airlines including the four surviving founding airlines and Alaska Airlines, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, S7, and SriLankan Airlines as well as Fiji Airways as a Oneworld Connect partner.
