The chorus of voices calling for the cancellation of the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games continues to grow.

On Friday, a petition to do just that gained support in Japan, on the heels of plans by officials there to extend the state of emergency in the city and its environs in order to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

The “Cancel the Tokyo Olympics to Protect Our Lives” petition on the website Change.org already had almost 250,000 signatures within 18 hours of going live.

“We demand cancellation of the Tokyo Olympic Games in order to protect our lives and well-being,” reads the opening of the petition.

“The spread of the virus has not been stopped at all in Tokyo, the rest of the country or the world,” it continues. “Vaccination is so far limited to certain regions like the U.S. and Europe, so it is not a definitive way of stopping infections. Are we going to hold the Tokyo Olympics even if it puts lives and jobs in danger?”
