The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wednesday said it had loosened its requirements for fully vaccinated cruise-ship passengers to wear masks.

The news was announced in an update of its Conditional Sailing Order.

The action allows vaccinated passengers to explore by themselves on shore at points of call.

Passengers “may engage in self-guided or independent exploration during port stops, if they wear a mask while indoors,” the CDC said.

Cruise ship operators may “at their discretion, may advise passengers and crew that – if they are fully vaccinated – they may gather or conduct activities outdoors, including engaging in extended meal service or beverage consumption, without wearing a mask except in crowded settings.”
