The Broadway League and the American Theater Wing – the two organizations that together present the Tony Awards – announced the 2021 awards ceremony will take place on September 26.

The award show will take place at a Broadway theater although which theater has yet to be determined.  There was no announcement made of a host for the program, either.

The underlying message for the Tonys will be that Broadway is back in business, a sentiment echoed by the title of the show, “The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back!”

The ceremony, originally scheduled for June 7, 2021, will take place shortly after multiple Broadway shows have reopened.  The first to reopen will be “Hadestown” on September 2, followed by “Chicago,” “Hamilton,” “The Lion King,” and “Wicked” on September 14.

What will be broadcast on CBSwill be alive concert event, featuring superstar Broadway entertainers and Tony Award winners reuniting onstage to perform beloved classics and celebrate the joy and magic of live theater,” a news release said.

The three most competitive awards – best musical, best play, and beset play revival – will be presented live during the television broadcast on CBS, while other awards will be presented on a broadcast on the streaming service Paramount+.
