Rosewood Hotels and Resorts announced plans to open a new property on Mikayo Island in Japan. The Rosewood Miyakojima will be the hotelier’s first property in Japan when it opens in 2024.

Miyako Island, which lies 186 miles (300 kilometers) southwest of Okinawa Island, is the largest and the most populous island among the Miyako Islands of Okinawa Prefecture. Miyakojima, the Japanese word for the islands, feature white sand beaches against a turquoise-blue sea. The area offers rich aquatic life and a large coral reef expanse, and is popular for snorkeling and diving as well as deep-sea fishing.

The hotel will have 55 villas, each with private pools and landscaped gardens. Guests will have a choice of four restaurants and bars, which will range from a beachfront seafood establishment to a dining room offering island-raised beef.

The Asaya spa will feature a variety of treatments offered in traditional treatment rooms that are set in private gardens as well as indoor and outdoor hydrotherapy facilities. Asaya will also offer a variety of programs and services that the hotel says were influenced by local healing traditions.

The Rosewood Miyakojima will a 20-minute drive from Miyako Airport and 30 minutes from Shimojishima Airport.   Japan Airlines offers non-stop service to Miyako Airport from Tokyo, while Shimojishima is a larger airport with service to and from Hong Kong as well as multiple cities in Japan.
