Delta Air Lines said Wednesday that it plans to equip its flight attendants with the new Apple iPhone 12.

The action, the carrier said, is “a step towards the future of a more connected and human onboard experience.”

The new iPhones will be connected to the AT&T mobile network, which offers nationwide 5G service.

In a statement, AT&T said that, with this move, “Delta will help lead the commercial airline industry into the 5G era.”

The iPhone 12 includes support for augmented reality, an interactive experience of a real-world environment where the objects that reside in the real world are enhanced by computer-generated perceptual information, which Delta says it will use for both training and to check in-cabin inventory of items.

Delta is by far not the first airline to deploy iPhones to flight attendants and other customer-facing employees.  British Airways gave its 15,000 cabin crew iPhone XRs in 2019 and United Airlines in 2017 began upgrading the iPhone 6S models that its flight attendants used to iPhone 7 Pluses.

Currently, Delta flight attendants use a mix of Apple iPhone 7 Pluses and iPhone 8 Pluses.
