American Airlines Celebrates AAdvantage Frequent-Flyer 40th Anniversary with Special Website and Contests

American Airlines’ AAdvantage Frequent Flyer program turns 40 on May 1, and the airline is inviting the program’s members to celebrate.

The airline is offering members of the loyalty program the opportunity to win prizes and take advantage of special offers as part of the celebration.

Launched on May 1, 1981, the AAdvantage program is the second frequent-flyer program ever launched (the first was that of Texas International Airlines, which merged with Continental Airlines in 1982 and is now part of United Airlines, which was launched in 1979). The AAdvantage program is currently the world’s largest and has in excess of 100 million members

American has created a special website to celebrate the anniversary. The site offers facts about the program as well as “globe spins” and other chances to win prizes, which include AAdvantage miles, membership in the Admirals Club lounge program, and prizes from the program’s partners.

A recent “fun fact” was “[F]requent flyer hall of fame: one AAdvantage member tops the charts for most miles earned, at more than 194 million miles.“

Forty grand-prize winners will each win 1 million AAdvantage miles, while one second-place winner will win a two-night trip for four people to Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club in Orlando.
