Pilots at New York-based JetBlue Airlines voted to reject a tentative agreement with the airline that would allow its planned partnership with American Airlines to proceed.

American Airlines and JetBlue Airways announced a codeshare agreement and alliance last July that would allow the two carriers to leverage their complementary networks in the Northeast.

In order for any agreement between the two airlines to proceed ahead, the union that represents the pilots, the Air Line Pilots Association, said JetBlue management must provide them with assurances over job security.

“Job security, especially during turbulent points in our industry, is a main concern of every pilot,” said Chris Kenney, chairman of the JetBlue unit of ALPA.

JetBlue said it was “disappointed in the results of the vote.”  A spokesman told Frequent Business Traveler that the airline is committed to the American Airlines partnership and plans to move forward with it.
