If you think the weather has been wild thus far, fasten your seatbelt as it’s going to be a cold and bumpy ride next week.

The National Weather Service is predicting that every state in the Union wlll see temperatures below 32° F (0° C).

“It is still looking more and more like much of the nation will be dealing with very cold temperatures leading into the second week of February,” the service said.

The extreme cold will come courtesy of the polar vortex, a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both of the Earth’s poles.  The polar vortex has been weakened by a sudden stratospheric warning that occurred on January 5, 2021.  A sudden stratospheric warning is when the polar stratosphere warms and the winds that normally flow from west to east around the pole weaken dramatically and even reverse direction, corresponding to a breakdown of the polar vortex, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in a statement.

The warming will push cold air that was contained high in the atmosphere down to the surface, causing the extreme temperatures.

The Milwaukee office of the National Weather Service said there would be “bitter cold conditions” late next week, warning that “frostbite and hypothermia could occur within 30 minutes [of exposure] without proper clothing.”
