Health officials in New York State said that the highly transmissible form of the coronavirus known as Covid-19 B.1.1.7 and first detected in the United Kingdom has now reached the Empire State.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said that they had detected a case of the mutated version of the virus in a man from Saratoga County, which is in the eastern part of Upstate New York.

The man, whose identity was not disclosed, was said to be associated with a jewelry shop in Saratoga Springs, N. Fox Jewelers.  Other people there tested positive for the virus, state officials said, urging anyone who might have visited the shop since December 18 to be tested.

The news came as the number of new infections, hospitalizations, and deaths continued to increase there.

Originally detected in Britain, the new strain has now been identified in four states and 33 countries.
