The United Kingdom is expanding its lockdown amidst a continuing surge in new cases and hospitalizations there.

There were over 53,000 new cases on Tuesday, a single-day record, and health officials said that there over 20,000 people were in hospital, a figure far higher than at the peak of the outbreak in April.

Three quarters of the population will be in areas under tight Tier 4 restrictions, Matt Hancock, the country’s health secretary, said in Parliament Wednesday.

The action places northeastern England and large parts of northwestern, southwestern, and central England into the new tier.

The new Tier 4 “Stay at Home” alert level went into force in large parts of South East England one week before Christmas. The new tier calls for all non-essential shops as well as personal care businesses such as beauty parlors and barber shops, indoor entertainment businesses such as cinemas and bowling alleys, and indoor leisure venues such as public swimming pools and gyms to close.

People should not enter or leave Tier 4 areas, the government said, and people who reside in Tier 4 areas should not stay overnight away from their residences. Those in areas under Tier 1, 2, and 3 restrictions should not enter areas under Tier 4 restrictions.

Health officials in the United Kingdom said that the new strain is 70% more contagious and spreads far more quickly than other strains. The new strain is believed to be linked to a rise in cases in areas covered by the new restrictions.  It does not appear to be more deadly or resistant to vaccines.
