The United Kingdom is at a “tipping point” with respect to the coronavirus pandemic, a leading scientist there warned.

The country’s deputy chief medical officer, Jonathan Van-Tam, said that the seasons were “against us” and that the U.K. was running into a “headwind.”  He urged people to limit social contact.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce a three-tier lockdown system on Monday to members of parliament.  Different regions of the country would be placed in one of three tiers, depending on the local situation. Pubs and restaurants would be closed in regions with the highest number of cases, including northern England and the Midlands, and people would be told not to have contact with anyone outside of their household.

Britain currently has almost 604,000 reported cases.  Over 12,000 new infections were reported on Sunday, after 15,166 were reported on Saturday. The country is 12th in the number of deaths per million members of the population, with a figure of 630.

The critical R0 figure in Britain is estimated to fall within 1.2 and 1.5, according to the Government Office for Science and the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies. The figure means that, on average, every ten people who carry the coronavirus infection will infect between 12 to 15 others.

R0, pronounced “r naught,” is a mathematical term that indicates how contagious an infectious disease is.

In addition, the growth rate of the virus there is between +4% and +9%. This means that the number of infections in the country is growing between 4% and 9% each day.
