The world has recorded its highest number of daily coronavirus cases – 94,647 – since the pandemic began, fueled by a second wave in Europe.

The number of new reported cases of the coronavirus in the United States topped 50,000 Thursday for the first time in five days, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.  Eleven states – Alaska, Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming – set new daily records for the number of cases reported.  Only two states in the union reported a decline.

The Northeast United States, which was hard hit by the first wave of the coronavirus in the spring, is seeing signs of a possible second wave. New virus clusters are emerging in Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.

Meanwhile, schools in the New York City metropolitan area’s hotspots were closed again on Friday, as were restaurants and shops.  “We can stop this challenge from turning into a full-blown second wave – and we must,” said the city’s mayor, Bill de Blasio at a news conference.

The United States endured seesaw-like news concerning a possible new stimulus package.  On Tuesday, President Trump said he had called off talks and would wait until after the election.  On Wednesday, he indicated he might reconsider that move, and on Thursday, he suggested a deal could be at hand.

The Spanish government declared a state of emergency in Madrid and announced a lockdown that would, among other things, stop any of the city’s almost five million residents from leaving the Madrid region, now a hotspot for Covid-19, for a long weekend.

Russia reported 12,126 new cases – the highest number since the start of the pandemic – on Friday, according to data from health officials here.

Finally, Broadway theaters won’t be reopening at the end of the current year. The Broadway League, the trade association representing the industry’s 41 theaters, issued a statement Friday morning saying that its theaters would remain closed through the end of May 2021.
