Paris is not the only capital city imposing restrictions as officials across the Continent struggle to contain another wave of the coronavirus.

London will move from a Tier 1 or medium alert level to Tier 2, a high alert level of restrictions as of Saturday morning,

The move was announced by the country’s health secretary, Matt Hancock, on Thursday. The move comes after the city’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, said that the capital had reached a “critical moment” in its fight against Covid-19.  He later said that the coronavirus was spreading rapidly “in every corner” of the city.

London residents will be banned from socializing or conducting activities with other households indoors regardless of setting.  This includes pubs and restaurants.  The Tier 2 alert restricts outdoor gatherings to six people, and Londoners are being asked to avoid public transit where and whenever possible.

“We knowfrom the first peak that the infection can spread fast and put huge pressures on the NHS, so we must act now to prevent the need for tougher measures later on,” Hancock said to reporters.
