At the company’s second virtual-only product launch, Apple introduced several new iPhones capable of connecting to faster 5G networks, a new HomePod, and a charger that can charge both the iPhone and Apple Watch.

Unlike at past events in September where Apple would reveal its new line of iPhones along with other products, Apple only unveiled the latest Apple Watch and the iPhone 12’s debut was delayed to mid-October due to pandemic-induced delays in production.

“Today is the beginning of a new era for iPhone,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook, referencing the new support for faster 5G networks.

Apple introduced four iPhones with 5G support, namely the iPhone 12 Pro, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, the iPhone 12, and iPhone 12 mini.

The iPhone 12 Pro line sports a new more squared off look that recalls the design of the iPhone 4 and comes with Ceramic Shield glass, which is more durable than any other smartphone glass, the company said, with four times better drop performance compared to the previous iPhone model. The iPhone 12 Pros use Apple’s new A14 Bionic processor, have a new camera, include a LiDAR scanner, and a Super Retina XDR display.

The display size on the iPhone 12 Pro has been increased from 5.8” (on the iPhone 11 Pro) to 6.1” and on the iPhone 12 Pro Max from 6.5” to 6.7”. The camera has been updated with an “expansive” ultra wide angle lens and a telephoto lens with an even longer focal length on iPhone 12 Pro Max.  The two Pro iPhones also come with a new LiDAR scanner that supports immersive augmented reality.

The iPhone 12s are water, sand, and dust resistant to IP68, an international standard for devices, which have been deemed resistant to submersion in water to 5’ (1.5 m) for up to 30 minutes.

Prices start at $699 for the iPhone 12 Mini, while the iPhone 12 Pro starts at $999.  The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max are available in four stainless steel finishes in graphite, silver, gold, and pacific blue

Customers in Australia, China, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States will be able to place orders for the iPhone 12 Pro starting at 8 a.m. EDT on October 16, with availability on October 23, while the company will start to take orders for the iPhone 12 Pro Max on November 6 with deliveries on November 13.

Apple also introduced a new charging system, reviving the MagSafe name for a system that places an array of magnets around the wireless charging coil to ensure alignment with a charger that also has an array of magnets.

Finally, Apple introduced the HomePod mini, a 3.3” (84 mm) smart speaker that has most of the same features as the original (and larger) HomePod, which sells for $299.
