American Airlines Names Former Northwest CEO Steenland to Board of Directors

American Airlines announced the appointment of Douglas Steenland to its board of directors.

Mr. Steenland is the former CEO of Northwest Airlines, a position he held from 2004 through 2008.

“Doug’s expertise expands across the broader travel and hospitality sector,” said American CEO Doug Parker.

He currently serves as non-executive chairman of American International Group and as the lead independent director of Hilton Worldwide.

Mr. Steenland joined Northwest in 1991 as deputy counsel and was involved in its 1993 restructuring. He served as senior vice president and general counsel from 1994 through 1999, and as president from 2001 to 2004. He retired from Northwest when it merged with Delta Air Lines in 2008.

The former CEO graduated with a B.A. in history from Calvin College in 1973 and received his juris doctor degree at the National Law Center at George Washington Unaiversity in 1976.  He is also past chairman of the Guthrie Theater board of directors in Minneapolis.
