Southwest Airlines announced a new promotion under which it will offer flyers a free companion pass valid for seven weeks after taking one flight.

The move comes as the airline attempts to stimulate interest in air travel amidst the coronavirus pandemic-induced downturn in the industry.

The Companion Pass, part of the airline’s Rapid Rewards frequent-flyer program, is a benefit that allows the member to choose one person to fly with him at no charge except for taxes and fees.  The member’s flight can be purchased or obtained using points.  There is no limit as to how many times the benefit can be used while valid.

To qualify, a traveler must book the initial flight by September 24, 2020 and fly by November 15. The Companion Pass benefit will be valid from January 6, 2021 through February 28.

A Rapid Rewards member typically qualifies for the standard year-long Companion Pass benefit by flying 125,000 Companion Pass qualifying points or 100 qualifying flights.

Membership in the Rapid Rewards program is free.
