Google announced visual improvements to its Maps app that will add more detail and granularity to its maps.

The tech giant calls the updated version a “more colorful, easy-to-understand representation of the world.”

Google is introducing a new color-mapping algorithmic technique that its high-definition satellite imagery used in Maps and that transforms it to a “comprehensive, vibrant map of an area at a global scale.”

The changes, the company says, will make its maps more vibrant and detailed information, making clear the difference between tan beaches and deserts from blue lakes and rivers and lush forests and groves.

The changes will be available in the 220 countries and territories supported by the app effective immediately.

In addition to these changes, Google said it also plans to roll out more detailed views of roads for pedestrians that will show exactly where sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian islands are.
