Germans Must Walk Their Dogs Twice a Day Starting Next Year, New Law Says
Canines everywhere, take note: Germany’s dog owners will be required to walk their pets twice a day
The Bundesministerin für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft or Minister of Agriculture, Julia Klöckner, sponsored the law.
Under the regulations in the Hundeverordnung or Dogs Act, owners will be required to take their canine companions out for at least one hour on each of two walks. A quick walk around the block won’t cut it, although there is no word on how dogs might report their owners for short walks.
Klöckner said that the new act was based on scientific findings that show that dogs need a “sufficient measure of activity and contact with environmental stimuli” in the course of their lives.
The Hundeverordnung bans the tethering of dogs on a chain or a leash for long periods of time is also to be banned.
