Review and Test Drive: 2020 Mazda Mazda6 Signature – Road Trip to Asbury Park

Reviewing cars during the worst of the coronavirus pandemic here in the New York area was one of the few things I could really look forward to and the temporary drop in traffic made far longer day trips possible as a perverse form of compensation.

Every spring, like clockwork we have added a Mazda Mazda6 to our short-term press fleet and its arrival was always greatly anticipated.

One reason is because all of the Mazdas we’ve driven have a clear form of DNA that makes them a Mazda.  It’s hard to instill a particular set of attributes – a car’s soul if you would – across a range of cars. Some automakers, most notably BMW, do it well. As for others, in some cases you’d think each car model came from a completely different parent.

Mazda isn’t just “zoom zoom,” as its fun-to-drive message tells us. The Japanese automaker has really created its own DNA that is present in its vehicles, one that imbues the cars with peppy performance, responsiveness reserved for autocross, great ride quality, and high quality interiors.

The Mazda6, even though it was first unveiled in 2012 as a 2014 model and the beneficiary of a mid-life refresh for 2018, still looks current, perhaps due to its Kodo design language, first introduced on the Shinari concept car in 2010. Kodo is something the automaker says is intended to serve as expression of natural energy. Mazda’s head of design, Ikuo Maeda, said back I 2010 that Kodo was intended to give the small carmaker’s cars “a new sense of presence and purpose.”

The first time we saw the 2018 Mazda6, it looked like a completely redesigned model. Even before one opens the driver’s door one is greeted by a new grille, the wing motif, a redesigned fascia with fog lamps integrated into the headlights, and new taillights.
