The State of New York will postpone plans to reopen indoor movie theaters, fitness centers, and shopping malls, Governor Andrew Cuomo said at a press conference.

Such establishments were slated to be allowed to resume operations in Phase 4 of the state’s reopening.  Phase 4 will begin in some parts of the state on Friday.

The governor said that more study is needed on indoor viral transmission, adding that the state’s Department of Health will review the matter and expressed concern that some air conditioning systems could be actually spreading the virus.

“We’re looking at what happened in other states,” said the governor. “There’s some reports that malls, bars, certain social clubs with air conditioning, that air conditioning may not be cleansing the air of the virus, just recirculating the air with the virus.”

Movie theaters, Broadway theaters, gyms, and malls were shuttered in early March as the coronavirus pandemic took hold in the state.
