Delta Air Lines announced Wednesday it will make aircraft seating more social-distancing friendly on flights by blocking middle seats in coach

The airline will reduce the overall number of passengers on each flight in order to accommodate the block.

“Delta is taking steps to help customers and employees practice social distancing on the ground and in the air in keeping with current health-expert recommendations,” it said in a statement.

The policy goes into effect on April 13, 2020.

American Airlines implemented a similar policy on March 24, 2020.

In addition, the airline will temporarily suspend advance Medallion complimentary upgrades and they will going forward to be processed manually by a gate agent in order to allow the best weight balance and separation of travelers.

The middle seats will be blocked in coach as well as well as the airline’s Comfort+ premium-economy lite and Premium Select premium-economy cabins. Travelers can still request to be seated directly next to travel companions or family members.
