The global caseload of Covid-19 surpassed 1.2 million, and over half the world’s population has been asked to remain home. The number of cases in the United States is now over 323,000 and over 9,100 deaths have been reported from the virus.

President Trump, who announced the new CDC guidance that people should wear masks even if they present no symptoms and then demurred when asked if he would wear one, once again suggested again that Americans might be able to attend religious services on Easter Sunday.

New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a briefing that the number of new coronavirus deaths had fallen, as had the number of new hospitalizations.  The death toll in the past 24 hours had been 594, fewer than the 630 the state had reported Saturday while the number of new hospitalizations also fell, to 574 from 1,095.

In neighboring New Jersey, a patchwork quilt of densely packed towns and cities, the outbreak is surging, the state’s governor said.  Over 34,000 people have tested positive and the death toll there is at least 847.

Captain Brett Crozier, the navy captain who was removed from command of the Covid-19-stricken aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, tested positive for the virus, two Naval Academy classmates of his reported.

Meanwhile, because they don’t have anything else to do during the virus outbreak, police in Britain are investigating three fires at cellphone towers in Belfast, Birmingham, and Liverpool as possible arson, as unfounded online link 5G mobile networks and the novel coronavirus.

There are stay-at-home orders in place in all but nine states in the United States, and in five stats – Arkansas, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota – there are no such orders in place in major cities or towns.

Practice social distancing consistently no matter where you are outside your home and wear a mask in public.  Wash your hands often.  When you do leave to go shopping, wipe down your shopping cart with a Clorox-type wipe.  And did we say, “wash your hands”?

The number of coronavirus cases across the globe is now 1.25 million, of which 256,527 have recovered, based on data compiled by Worldometer, a service that compiles and makes available world statistics. The death toll now stands at 67,913.

The outbreak continues to ravage the Continent.  France, Italy, and Spain continue to account for over half the global total, with a death toll of 35,865.  Meanwhile, the fatality rate in Germany, which has almost 99,000 cases, remains extremely low at 1.5%, compared to 12% in Italy, and approximately 10% Britain, Italy, and Spain.

In the United States and its territories, the number of confirmed cases is 323,568, while the death toll stands at 9,174.

Put differently, Spain now has 266 deaths per million members of the population while Italy has 263.  Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland have had 125, 116, 103 and 79 deaths per million respectively, while China, Germany, and the United States have reported two, 18, and 28 deaths per million respectively.

04-05 Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said that the party should consider a virtual nominating convention due to limitations on public gatherings as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

04-05 The mayor of Tybee Island assailed the Georgia governor’s plan to reopen beaches in the state.  The governor issued a state-wide shelter-in-place executive order, superseding local orders relating to the Covid-19 outbreak, and then opened up the state’s beaches, albeit with social-distancing rules in place.

04-04 The governor of New Jersey, Phil Murphy, pleased for “Cobalt” programmers to help fix and update the state’s COBOL-based mainframe systems that are overwhelmed by the number of unemployment insurance applications.

04-04 United Airlines is partnering with the City of New York and offering free-round-trip flights to medical volunteers who travel to the Big Apple to assist in the fight against the novel coronavirus.
