The United States now has the most confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the world.

The number of cases in the country reached 82,179 late Thursday, overtaking China, which has 81,285, according to data compiled from Worldometer, a service that compiles and makes available world statistics.

China, which despite the demotion on the list has had almost three times the number of deaths, said it was closing its borders to nearly all foreigners.

Meanwhile, the number of cases in Italy rose to 80,589, up by 6,203 over the past day.

The figures for the United States were up by 13,968 over the same period, while the increase in China was minimal.
