German State Finance Minister Kills Himself Over Coronavirus Fallout Concerns

The Minister of Finance of Hesse, Thomas Schäfer, was found dead, an apparent suicide.

Herr Schäfer, Ministerpräsident Volker Bouffier said, was in despair over the fallout from the coronavirus crisis. His body was found along railway tracks of the Cologne-FrankfurtHigh-Speed Rail Lineat Hochheim, near Frankfurt.

“I must assume, that these issues overwhelmed him,” Bouffier said in a statement.

Land Hesse, the State of Hesse, is a parliamentary republic with six million inhabitants and a member state of the Federal Republic of Germany.  Its capital is Wiesbaden, and Frankfurt is the state’s largest metropolitan area.

Born on February 22, 1966, Herr Schäfer was a lawyer and politician and a member of the Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union party.  He served as Finance Minister for over a decade.

The late Finanzminister leaves behind a wife and two children.
