American Airlines announced it would henceforth allow crewmembers to don face masks while at work. Both United Airlines and Delta Air Lines already permitted this.

The reversal comes after intense pressure by employees and the union representing the airline’s flight attendants.

The news was announced in an e-mail to crewmembers the company’s vice president of customer planning, Jill Surdek, who underscored the fact that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintain that masks are not effective protection against the coronavirus.

The airline said that it is unable to supply face masks given a worldwide shortage but asked crewmembers to wear face masks in a neutral color.  Surdek also asked employees to stop taking masks from onboard kits intended for use when attending to sick passengers.
