Today, the Schwarzreiter Tagesbar and Restaurant, named after King Ludwig II’s favorite fish, is open Tuesdays through Saturdays and is also closed in August.  I didn’t dine at the Schwarzreiter during this stay but I did breakfast at the Tagesbar daily, which offers a magnificent buffet of fruit, joghurt, breads, croissant, cereals, muesli, juices, cold cuts, and cheeses. Warm dishes such as eggs and pancakes may be ordered from the waiter or waitress.

On a previous visit, I was introduced to the art of cigar smoking in the Kempinski Cigar Lounge, where the manager explained what exactly one does with a cigar (rituals are involved).

My favorite place – perhaps in the world – to sit is the Jahreszeiten Lobby with the mosaic of the four seasons overhead.  Presided over by Joël Belouet, the hotel’s tea sommelier (the hotel’s website refers to him as its “tea master in gold”), a visit there is always accompanied by a warm handshake and much catching up while he brings me my favorite white tea, White Yin Long, accompanied by homemade scones and pastries, clotted cream, strawberry jam, and (of course) delicate finger sandwiches.

When I have to finally check out of the Vier Jahreszeiten, it is then when I feel sad that I must leave and I feel envious of Dr. Otternschlag, who was a permanent resident of the Grand Hotel.

Indeed, to paraphrase Otto Kringeleinin the opening scene of “Grand Hotel”: “I’m staying here at the Kempinski Vier Jahreszeiten…. All the best people stay here.”
