IMG_1479 (1)Marriott International announced the opening of the JW Marriott Maldives Resort and Spa on the Maldives archipelago. The new property is on Vagary Island, which is part of the Shiviyani Atoll or administrative district.

Villas at the 60-key property start at 2,520 square foot (234 square meters), and feature private pools and sunbathing decks.  Single-story and duplex Overwater Pool Villas overlook the Arabian Sea of the Indian Ocean and are set on stilts. Beach Pool Villas feature direct access to the beach and are intended for larger groups.  The décor is drawn from both the local Maldivian culture as well as the natural surroundings of the tropical country.  The roofs of the villas were designed to recall inverted dhoni boats, the traditional Maldivian wooden fishing vessels.

The property offers a variety of fitness and spa activities and offers an overwater gym, open-air pavilion, yoga, workout classes, and breathing exercises, while the Spa by JW offers a variety of treatments.

Dining options for guests include a choice of five restaurants, each specializing in a specific cuisine with the exception of Aailaa, which offers a more international menu.  Kaashi, a treetop restaurant, offers Thai dishes, while Fiamma offers Italian specialties and Hashi features a teppanyaki grill. Shio is an overwater grill restaurant.

The resort also has three bars that have a menu featuring a wide variety of drinks, from cocktails to sake.

The Maldives archipelago is located on the Chagos-Laccadive Ridge, a vast submarine mountain range in the Indian Ocean.  The Maldives is the world’s lowest country, with an average ground-elevation of 4’ 11” (1.5 m) above sea level, and it is threatened by rising sea levels.
