DSC_0113 (1)United Airlines announced Miles on a Mission, a new way in which members of the airline’s MileagePlus frequent-flyer program can support non-profit organizations.

Miles on a Mission is a crowdsourcing platform that allows MileagePlus members to donate earned miles to non-profit organizations and charities that have registered with the airline.

The new program “lets MileagePlus members support non-profits in need of air travel,” the airline said in a statement.

The Chicago-based airline is launching the program with 12 non-profits that include the Holocaust Museum Houston, the Transplant Life Foundation, OperationUSA, and Waves for Water.  Each of the 12 organizations will have 28 days to raise at least 250,000 miles. United will add new non-profits as each meets its goal.

United is kicking off the program with a donation of two million miles and will match the first 50,000 miles of each initial campaign.

The program went live on October 25 and one non-profit, Veterans Community Project, has already met its goal.
